The nasolabial folds are lines found on each side of the mouth, which are more visible when you smile. Made of dense connective tissue and muscles, the nasolabial folds become more visible with age as the skin becomes thinner and saggy. Although the nasolabial folds are not considered a sign of premature aging or a medical condition, many people tend to develop lines next to those folds. Some people can also have lines or wrinkles that extend down to the chin. They are known as marionette lines. Nasolabial folds become more visible because of different factors, such as fat loss that can make the cheeks and the area around them look saggy, collagen loss due to aging that makes the skin appear thin and weak, sun exposure, which results in changes in texture and wrinkles, frequent fluctuations in weight or rapid weight loss, smoking and alcohol.
